We laid sandstone squares in a running bond pattern for the patio, but we twisted every other course slightly off 90 degrees. It gives the whole space a casual, almost organic feel—like the stones were just dropped there, rather than forced into a rigid grid. The irregular gaps between the rotated pavers let us tuck in tiny stepping mosses and thyme, softening the edges between our seating area and the garden beds.
